Houston based professional photographer available for commercial/assignment work as well as fine art sales

Steve Harris

Steve Harris completed his schooling at Parsons School of Design, Paris, France in 1988, and embarked on a career that has taken him from the fashion industry on the streets of Paris, to the advertising community in New York City, to the top of the mountains of South America, and beyond.

After relocating back to native terrain in 1992, Steve put his efforts into Commercial and Fine Art photography with a renewed passion for his craft. After paying his dues in respect to photography, he slowly built a loyal following of clients and individuals who helped pave the way to professional stability

During his tenure as House Photographer at the infamous Rockefellers Nightclub in Houston, he was able to sink his grip into the rhythm of Texas music and create an extensive body of work of all that played the stage at Rockefellers. From there, it was an easy transition into photographing for the entertainment and music industries.

After the passing of Townes Van Zandt and Doug Sahm in the late 1990’s, Steve, and his passion for Texas music, decided that someone needed to document, not in a live setting, but rather something soulful and interesting, the ways of Texas’ best kept secret; the Singer/Songwriter. After some research and footwork, it became clear that nothing had been done to capture the spirit of the musicians, so in early 2000, Steve set out on a labor-of-love mission to document the talent, before it was too late.

He started with the musicians he had come to know, and was quickly given access to many more through the songwriting community. Everyone whom he asked was completely open to the idea of a book project that not only focused on the artists, but also put them in a category unto themselves. After years of chasing musicians around the state and beyond, he was ready to share a bit with the public, which resulted in a spot in Foto-Fest Houston, 2002. This was met with some praise as the onset of something good. Steve continued with his commercial assignments and travel for both work and play, as the project made progress.

In 2005, as he was working on another project, the project finally was able to stand on its own as he signed a contract with University of Texas Press to see the book to fruition. Seven years later and many sheets of film and frustrations, “Texas Troubadours” has seen the light.

Steve is still hard at work with commercial assignments and always expanding his personal projects, some that will see him traveling, others right out the door.
