Painting is a hobby I started a few years ago in grad school as a break from reading and writing. As I’ve learned to love the process and product of working with acrylics, my compositions have evolved from what I whimsically call “doodles” and “non-talking heads.”

Doodles begin as quick pencil sketches exploring motion, tension, and asymmetrical balance. Their organic interlocking forms express both wholeness and fragmentation, and the vivid colors of the final compositions create designs both of harmony (in their balance) and of dissonance (in their shifting optical illusions). Such musical terms are appropriate to my current work, which integrates musical instruments into the doodle designs.

My non-talking heads, as I playfully dubbed an early series of abstract mouthless portraits, have evolved into monochrome featureless shapes, which interact with the instruments and blend into the doodle designs.

In its color palette, bold layers of flat paint, and pure abstraction, my current work is partly inspired by Color Field painters like Frank Stella, Kenneth Noland, and Barnett Newman. In its figural design and objects, it can be seen a loosely related to surrealists like Rene Magritte and Salvadore Dali. And in its sharp lines and smooth vivid patterns, it is indebted to influences such as neon signs and computer design.
