Children's art booth added to art market lineup - Hawaiian Band gets lovers in the spirit for Valentines - artists prepare for five year anniversary
Houston, TX. January 31, 2009 - First Saturday Arts Market and artist and educator Janis Harper of Dayton Texas will introduce something new to the five year old arts market at the February 7 event; a children's art booth.
Harper, an award winning artist and writer, said she noticed a large number of children in attendance with their parents, and thought, "Hey, we need an art booth!"
Market founder and manager Mitch Cohen was very supportive and says, "An activities area is one thing I always admired about the Bayou City Arts Festival, your walking around this huge top notch art festival, and there are children painting and creating right in the middle of it all. When Janis offered told me I was thrilled."
For a nominal fee a variety of items will be available for children to choose from to paint with Harper's artistic direction.
This month the market features a live Hawaiian band, The Grass Skirts. The Grass Skirts perform the famous sounds of the 'ukulele and steel guitar, and a variety of hapa haole standards, tropical classics, Hawaiianized pop hits, and original compositions. Band members Alfred Tam, Christopher Daniello, and Mateo Rhodes will perform from 3:30 to 6:00 p.m.
First Saturday Arts Market celebrates five years in March and still features all original art by the artists. Artists attending the February 7 market include jewelers, painters, stained glass, pottery, photography and fiber arts. The market also features vendors from area farmers markets the make homemade products such as soaps, breads and preserves. The Heights 1st Saturday shopping shuttle stops at the market from noon to 4:00 p.m.
